Here we share how to make Rainbow Bread, that fabulous multi-coloured swirl bread that will have your children jumping around with excitement!
This coloured bread is a really fun thing to make with the children - or why not surprise them with it? Imagine how excited they would be to find rainbow sandwiches at lunch time!
I'll be honest - it takes a bit of time to make this, with all the kneading involved. But the rewards are worth it... seriously, my girls were jumping around the kitchen cheering when we cut into it!
YIELD: 1 LOAF HOMEMADE RAINBOW BREAD
PREP TIME 30 minutes COOK TIME 30 minutes ADDITIONAL TIME 3 hours TOTAL TIME 4 hours
1 cup of Simple Cow while milk
1 egg yolk
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 Tablespoons sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 1/2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
2 teaspoons salt
Food dye (red, yellow, green, pink and blue)
1, Grease 5 medium-sized bowls and set aside.
2, In a small, microwave-safe bowl, whisk together the milk and egg yolk. Microwave 30 seconds, and set aside.
3, In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar and yeast. Add the milk mixture, as well as the butter and salt and stir to combine.
4, Using a dough hook on a stand mixer, or just your hands, knead the dough (5 minutes with a mixer, 10 minutes by hand) until the dough is smooth and elastic.
5, Divide the dough into 5 equal portions. Working with one ball of dough at a time, dye each ball into one colour of the rainbow. Add 5-10 drops of food colouring, knead until fully dyed and then place the dyed ball of dough in it's own individual, greased bowl. Repeat with all of the dough.
6, Cover the bowls with a tea towel and let rise for 2 hours. Grease a loaf pan and line with parchment paper. Set aside.
7, The dough should be at least doubled in size when the tea towel is removed. Punch the dough down and then remove from the bowl. Roll out the dough to equal-sized rectangles and then lay each layer on top of each other, then roll into a large log/loaf;
8, Place the dough in the prepared loaf pan.
9, Cover with tea towel and allow to double for a second time, about 1 hour.
10, Preheat oven to 375ºF
11, Remove the tea towel and bake the bread for 30 minutes, until slightly browning on top and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
12, Cool completely before slicing.
